7GEN CLIMATE CHANGE REPORT

Purpose

Consolidate the latest and most trusted western scientific data on climate change and the anticipated impact on Sicangu Makoce. This compilation of various reports and sources is intended to be a tool to be merged with and used to support Indigenous wisdom and practices. 

Main Takeaways

  • Global temperatures are rising; locally, temps have risen about 2 degrees F
  • Major precipitation events will increase in frequency and get more extreme
  • There is a risk to the economy (agriculture) and infrastructure
  • Land and water management and resilient infrastructure are key

Recommendations

  • Need action at all levels: individual up to governmental
  • Responses to climate change require both mitigation and adaptation
  • Mitigation strategies: reduction in carbon emissions through means such as renewable energy, reduced consumption, carbon capture (eg regnerative agriculture and land management), as well as government regulation
  • Adaptation: evolving agriculture to match the changing climate and environmental needs (eg regenerative agriculture and land management), as well as disaster-resistant development.
